TEN

“Breathe,” Micah said. He urged Rachel out of the door and toward the wicker chair on the porch. He’d heard enough to know that Andy was missing. Easy as it was to jump to the worst conclusions, chances were good the boy was close by and fine.

“I can’t just sit down,” Rachel said around a gulping breath. “I’ve got to find him. And Jeremy, too.”

Nico and Erin followed them onto the porch.

“What has it been? Ten minutes since you last saw Andy?” Micah asked.

Rachel jerked her head once.

Micah looked from Erin to Nico. “You two know what to do. Check in every ten minutes.”

They headed down the walk and got into the vehicle that Nico had arrived in earlier.

Rachel looked shell-shocked. He gently urged her into the chair.

“Where else would he go?”

She bent her head and pressed her fingers to her eyes. “I don’t know. Maybe to the alley since we were back there this morning and he was so curious about the policeman. Maybe…He knows he can’t leave the block and that he’s to stay in sight of the house.”

“Then, let’s go check the alley.” When she didn’t immediately fall into step beside him, he looked back at her. “We’ll find him, Rachel. I promise.”

She stood, her expression fierce. “Don’t make promises you might not be able to keep.” She sucked in a shuddering breath and pressed a hand against her chest. “This is my fault.”

Still heading toward the back of the house, he shook his head. “He’s just being a kid. It’s nobody’s fault. He’ll turn up.”

“No. You don’t understand. It’s Graden—”

“It’s probably not,” Micah said, doing his best to sound reassuring, the familiar knot in the middle of his chest tightening at the sound of the man’s name.

“Because I called him.” Her voice trailed off miserably, and when Micah turned around to look at her she added, “This morning.”

He was positive he must have misunderstood her.

“I told him to leave us alone and that I was sick of the games and—” She stretched out a hand, her voice so choked he could barely understand her. “I threatened him.”

The words made about as much sense to Micah as they would have if she’d told him she’d murdered someone or had shaved her head. Her threatening anyone, even Graden, simply didn’t compute.

“What if he’s taken my son?” Tears welled in her eyes.

“Let’s keep looking before we jump to any conclusions.” He didn’t dare follow her line of reasoning or he’d be as panicked as she was. Torn between the need to see if Andy was in the alley and to comfort Rachel, he settled with taking her hand and pulling her along with him as they headed toward the back fence. “Tell me what happened.”

She related the conversation. While calling Graden definitely wasn’t a smart move, her “I’ll be forced to take matters into my own hands” wasn’t the kind of threat that would get her in any trouble unless the man showed up dead and there was a direct link to Rachel.
